CVII THE PENOBSCOT ASSOCIATION GRANT-Continued.
The fifth tract of the Penobscot Association grant is comprised, approximately, in the present parish of Dufferin. At Oak Point there was a comparatively large reserve for fortification. The lots above it, fronting on the St. Croix, were granted as follows:-

| Wm. Gammon, jr. | John Curry |
| John Pagan | Daniel Brown |
| Henry Ross | Nathl Bailey |
| James Hannah | Benn Millican |
| John Bean | Robinson Crocker |
| James Wardwell | Benn Millican, jr. |
| Peter Valette | William Pagan |
| Matthew Thorton | David Eastman |
| Wm. Swain | Robert Pagan |
| Moses Barnard | James Doty |
Between this tract and Dennis Stream was a tract reserved by the Surveyor General of the Kings Woods.
The sixth tract began at the upper line of the Indian Land; and included the river lots to the foot of Spragues Falls and the lots fronting on either side of Mohannes Stream. Few if any of the grantees became residents; but the following notes may be of interest:1
(a) Lots fronting on the St. Croix, from the upper boundary line of the present town of Milltown to the lower line of Upper Mills-
| Robert Pagan Turner | Stimson Stewart |
| Rebecca Eldridge | Hugh McLeod |
| Thomas Littlejohn | Samuel Little |
| James Chatty |
(b) A fan-shaped group, lots narrowed at the rear, now the incorporated town of Upper Mills-
| Robert Warden | Thos. Ross |
| Geo. Gunn | Francis Shipton |
| Daniel Mowatt | John Taylor |
| James Scott | John Frazer |
| John Gillis | Daniel McMaster |
| Richard Meager |
(c) From the upper boundary of Upper Mills to Spragues Falls-
| Nat. Harley | Thos. Morris |
| Wm. Morris | John Calef |
| John Dunn | Archd Murphy |
| Alfred Butler | John Crofford |
| James Toice | Alex. Morrison |
| Thos. Turner | John Mallory |
| John Dizen |
[One or more names wanting.]
(d) A range of lots on the east side of Mohannes Stream, in the rear of those first mentioned, and adjoining the Indian Lands-
| Robert McArthur | Thos. Pagan |
| Wm. Moore | James Brown |
| Nicholas Turner | P. Littlejohn |
| John Andrews | John Fisher |
| Donald McLean | Robt. Sime |
| John Quantum | Chas. Daphneck |
| John Caslon | Sperons Ritter |
| F. Bulkeley | Lodk Hildebrand |
(e) On west side of the stream, and abutting on the rear of the upper group of the river lots-
| John Shields | Wm. Anstruther |
| Mark Caslon | John Wall |
| John Trott | Geo. Smose |
| Mat. Scullion | Ephraim Farnham |
| John Long | John Parker |
| Wm. Curry | John Jordan |
| Geo. Dawson | Jacob Young |
| Israel Andrews | Gillam Taylor |
| Collen Campbell | Wm. Parr |
| James Philips | Isabella Doice |
Several of these grantees will be referred to in a later chapter.
1From a rough list, undated, in which some of the names are evidently misspelled, and possibly some are not those of the original owners. A correct list of the names as they appeared on the grant, could be obtained in the Crown Land office.
Caren's note: Robert Carver (Bob) Brooks, a researcher in Maine, has told me that "Chas. Daphneck," "Sperons Ritter," and "Lodk Hildebrand" are Charles or Carl Dupenack, Hyeronimus Ritter, and Ludovick Hildebrand, all of the Brunswicker Regiment Specht.
