I have had mitochondrial DNA testing done by Family Tree DNA. I had both the HVR1 and HVR2 tests done. The results are as follows:

Mitochondrial DNA is passed down the maternal line unchanged except for the occasional mutation. Here is my maternal line as far back as I have been able to take it:

Doris (Webster) Courneya - 1929-2010, born in Ontario
Rose (Buck) (Webster) Rippi - 1904-1993, born in Ontario
Sarah (Beaubien) Buck - 1860-1941, born in what is now Ontario
Sarah (Kimmerly) Beaubien - 1828-1900, born in what is now Ontario
Margaret (Foote) Kimmerly - 1809-?, born in what is now Ontario
Elizabeth (Smith) Foote - ~1787-?, possibly born in what is now Ontario
possibly Margaret, wife of Comfort Smith, who came to what is now Ontario, possibly from New York
My guess is that this Margaret may have been of English background.
